CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY UNITS

ICON Development Solutions occupies a fully-equipped clinical pharmacology investigative
unit, formerly known as Medeval, Ltd. on the Manchester Science Park, adjacent to the main
University of Manchester campus and Manchester’s main central hospital
(Manchester Royal Infirmary - MRI).
Studies in healthy volunteers and select patient groups are undertaken in the clinical
pharmacology unit, which currently has a total of 80 beds (including 4 individual bedroom units)
arranged in 9 ward areas. The wards fulfill a variety of roles, with flexible layouts to
accommodate pharmacodynamic studies (with low bed density and space for the measurement of
bedside dynamics), intensive monitoring (with almost half the beds having full ECG monitors),
and routine clinical studies.
Conveniently located on-site are fully equipped clinical pathology and bioanalytical laboratories
both of which are accredited to internationally recognized standards. These laboratories offer
significant advantages to our clients by providing real-time analysis of samples for important
safety issues and enabling critical decisions, such as dose escalations, to be made confidently
and quickly.
Our pharmacy unit, also located on-site, undertakes all preparations and dispensing of study
materials and is equipped with a clean room facility with a grade “A” isolator system for Aseptic
drug dispensing. Volunteer accommodations include a lounge area (equipped with TV/Video/satellite),
a study/quiet area and full catering facilities.
